2001 MC Junior Nationals Regatta Results July 14 - 15, 2001 (Results and narrative submitted by Bob Miller on August 30, 2001)
The Junior National Championship was held on
Diamond Lake July 14-15, 2001. Ten young men from four yacht clubs arrived
ready to sail, however the wind was not as willing.
On Saturday we were able to sail two races in light and shifty wind. Joe Rotunda, Spring Lake,
led with a 1st and a 2nd followed by Teddy Knape SLYC(6), Ian Green, Torch Lake(8), and Will Loux,
Diamond Lake(8).
Sunday dawned with dim prospects for racing. Principal Race Officer Matt Cassady encouraged
a few zephyrs to tease the fleet and we started to sail a shortened course. This was a real
drifter with the lead changing many times as different skippers found a little wind. The race
was won by Ian Green two minutes from the hour and half race time limit.
All of the junior skippers are to be congratulated for continuing under extremely difficult
conditions. Although Teddy Knape did not win a race his consistent sailing won the regatta.
