Eagle Lake Open - MC Scow Regatta
June 8, 2024

Racing Clinic - Friday, June 7th – Time = TBD; Host = TBD

Saturday, June 8th – 10 AM – 1-Day - The Eagle Lake Open!

Venue

Eagle Lake Sailing Club, a beautiful old sailing club with a wonderful history, is located on Eagle Lake in Edwardsburg, MI 49112.  The club is about 14 miles northwest of South Bend, IN the home of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish!  The lake is in the shape of an Eagle of course.  Depending on the wind direction there is a chance for a long beat impacted by points on each shore.  Often, we end up sailing in the belly of the eagle which is more of a bowl shape with oscillating winds and shorter beats.

General
  • Regatta Duration – This is a one-day Saturday only regatta.
  • Races Planned - 5 races are planned (1 toss out only if 5 races are sailed).
  • Pre-Regatta Set Up Assistance – Will be available Friday starting at 9 AM if we have a racing clinic, and 4 PM to 8 PM if we only do the Friday Skippers Dinner. Saturday boat setup will be available starting at 7 AM.
  • Post-Regatta Breakdown For Travel Assistance – Will be available from the club after the regatta and the post-race activities will not begin until all off-lake sailors are ready to travel home (unless they are planning on leaving their boat at the club and staying overnight).

  • Friday Events:
  • Racing Clinic – Timing TBD – We are working on putting together an event with an MC racing leader for both on and off-water instruction. If this happens details on the cost and the timing will be shared ASAP.

If you are interested, plan on blowing off the day Friday, pun intended, and treat yourself to a long weekend with plenty of sailing!  Regardless, if you wish to set up Friday there will be help at the club in the afternoon.

  • Captain’s Dinner – 6-9 PM - Regardless of the Racing Clinic, there will be a Captain’s Dinner with burgers and Johnsonville Cheese Brats with all the fixings, and of course plenty of great beers, wines, and other assorted beverages to wash everything down with!

We hope to see you Friday night!

  • Saturday Events:
  • Skipper’s Meeting – That is planned for 9:15 AM.
  • 1st Warning Signal – That is planned for 10 AM wind permitting (note that we will sail below class minimum winds if there is some stability in the wind).
Rules

The races will be governed by the rules defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS).

The following rules will be changed / clarified. These changes will appear in the Sailing Instructions.

The rules of the regatta are contained in greater detail in the SAILING INSTRUCTIONS, but in particular note:

  1. Scoring System – Low Point - USSA Appendix A - RRS A2.1 is changed to provide that when fewer than five (5) races are completed a boats score will be the total of all of her race scores. If five (5) races are completed, the worst score will be excluded (dropped) from her series (regatta) score.
  2. RRS A1 - A Complete Regatta – One completed race shall constitute a series (regatta)
  3. RRS 41 - Outside Help – This rule is modified so that a capsized MC may receive outside assistance, without penalty, and may continue to race so long as she sails the entire course and finishes properly.
  4. RRS 44.2 - One-Turn Penalties Only – This rule is changed to a one turn penalty for all penalties incurred on the course.  All remaining rule verbiage in 44.2 remains the same as written.
  5. RRS 30.2 - Starting Penalty – Modified Z Flag – We will sail under a modified Z Flag rule.  While we do not have an actual Z flag to fly any OCS boat identified will be penalized by 20% of the number of finishing boats for that race.  This rule is further modified so if there is a General Recall any OCS boat CAN restart that race WITH NO PENALTY APPLYING.

Eagle Lake Open - SI's

The official notice board will be in the front of the club (ELSC).

COURSES:
The race course will be Windward / Leeward.  Courses and course diagrams are posted in the Sailing Instructions.

An offset mark will be used adjacent to the windward mark.

A leeward gate will be used at the end of a leeward leg.  Boats shall sail between the marks and round either mark.

Capsize.  A boat that capsizes may receive outside assistance and continue racing. The boats score shall count in the race and series so long as the boat sails the full course and makes a proper finish.

Radio use will be at the discretion of the PRO.
